Background to Porthole

Porthole bar was created following the devastating earthquake in February 2011.  The earthquake destroyed many of Lyttelton's historic buildings in the main street, including a number of the popular bars and restaurants.

Porthole Bar is made of three shipping containers and material recycled from buildings lost in the earthquake.  It sits on the site of the well known and popular Volcano Cafe and Lava Bar.  Alot of memories from this busy restaurant live on in Porthole - most of the bar food is provided by the Volcano Kitchen, some of the artwork which don the container walls also came from Volcano and you will still see some of the familiar faces from the Volcano days, now on the other side of the bar enjoying a few drinks!

Owned and built by Mike Dunlay, Porthole opened its doors in December 2011.  It was designed as a semi-permanent solutions to the lack of bars and public buildings in the tight community of Lyttelton.

Porthole is owned by Mike Dunlay and his business partner Chavvah Sturrock.
